You created the most wonderful web site for your new puppy which you would like the entire world to see. Or you just signed up for a membership in a blogging site and you want everyone to hear you out. Just how would you do that without spending any money on marketing or annoying everyone with those pesky emails and popup ads?
It’s simple, really. Look at the following suggestions:
1. There’s nothing like worthwhile content
Your topics should be worthy of people’s attention. They would spend some of their precious time reading your words and looking at the images. If they see senseless content then they would go look elsewhere. Who is to say what is worthwhile to another, anyway? What’s valuable to you may not be to your readers, so elicit feedback through comments. Sometimes, it works to sensationalize but the effect is short and hard to sustain. If you’re not a Hollywood celebrity with cult following, then forget about it. Think about the effect you want to have on people. When one person likes what you wrote, he’ll be sure to tell his friends and his friends will tell their friends, and so on. You won’t have a huge fan base like Paris or Ashton or Kim, but you’ll have your loyal subscribers
2. Originality is the key
Being original gives you a long-term foundation. Just linking to what others are writing may give you visibility on that site but you just become a middleman. They might follow that site instead or spend more time in there than in yours. Now, there’s nothing wrong with networking. You can also gain from being posted in other sites, and it’s best to pay back by posting their sites in yours. But the core content in your sites should come from you. Not everyone would like it, not everyone would agree to what you are saying, but there’s no substitute for those who do.
3. Timeless is priceless
Famous dead people’s statements are still being quoted to this day. Either because it’s smart, it’s funny or it’s still applicable to the present and even to the future. Those are timeless comments. It doesn’t mean you should avoid current events and fads, but everyone else would be writing about them. Compose a material that was relevant before, is applicable today and will still be important to future generations.
4. Know thy audience
There are optimal schemes to ensure high rankings in search results. Writing shorter articles more frequently about a single topic can generate more search engine seeds that the database servers use in indexing. Likewise, writing long articles and repeating that certain phrase would place your site on top of the list. But short articles limit the things you can say, and long articles are boring, not to mention those repetitive lines that can be annoying. Remember that you are writing for human readers, not those computers. Write about topics relevant to your intended audience and leverage on the power of social networking. Your readers become your promoters.
5. Define your reason
Why do you want to increase traffic to your site? Is it because you just want to be shown on TV and be famous? Is it because you want to impress someone or a group of people? Do you want to make money? Do you want to reach out to your fellow human beings and know that someone somewhere agrees with you and has the same likes and dislikes? Or do you want to change the world? Is this the end in itself or just a means to a greater end? Whatever your reason is would drive you to achieve your goal.
6. Show the real you
Ask everyone what type of people they hate and you’d get an almost unanimous answer: a liar. Pretentions can get you the audience you want, but not for long. And nothing is worse than losing another person’s trust. Practice what you preach. And write what you practice. Be true to yourself and to your readers. They would appreciate it more.
7. Entries should come from the heart
Create articles on topics you are passionate about. Most readers can hear the heart speak through written words. Being honest should be more important than being famous. Brutal honesty is quite rare among cultured & sophisticated humans, so there’s a tendency to admire another human who can voice out the things they are so intimidated to say. Honesty begets respect, respect begets trust and trust begets web traffic.
8. Visualize the reader
Remind yourself that there’s a live human person on the other end who is reading your blog. Write as if you are having an actual discussion with him. Well, it’s more of a monologue because it’s one-way, but providing a space for comments would make it conversational.
9. All for the greater good
Ultimately, if you put the greater good on top of everything else, then you’ll gain a greater number of readers.
